A bit of fragrance always clings to the hand that gives you roses
Helen, an independent living resident residing in a Benedictine Living Community, responded with the Chinese proverb about roses when asked, “Why do you give?”
Helen started calling Benedictine Living Community her home just over two years ago and her neighbors quickly became irreplaceable to her. She enjoys her new life and wanted to show her appreciation. Helen decided to include Benedictine in her estate, to leave a legacy to a community she has come to love.
A long time ago a dear friend’s mother encouraged Helen to “give before you die.” Helen began to think about how she could do that and still be able to take care of her own needs as she aged. Discussions with the local Associated Foundation executive led Helen to the answer she was seeking - a Charitable Gift Annuity. Giving a substantial gift that provided her with an income for life was something that really appealed to her. “I could give and the fragrance would cling to my hand.”
Helen explained her decision, “I knew where the money was going and I still had income. Plus, I had tax advantages from the gift and, on the income I would be receiving - very fragrant roses. If the fragrance is too much for you, just give away the income it generates each year. It is a gift that could keep on giving, and like the quote says – as the purse is emptied, the heart is filled.”
“I think contributing to a fund that helps fellow residents when they need it rounds out the answer to why do you give?”
